Noah Okafor scored twice as Leeds United secured a crucial 2-1 victory over 10-man Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday, boosting their Premier League survival hopes.
Okafor struck twice in a dominant first-half display from Leeds, capitalising on defensive errors before United were reduced to 10 men after Lisandro Martínez was sent off for an off-the-ball incident involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin early in the second half.
Casemiro pulled one back for United with a powerful header, but Leeds held firm under sustained pressure to secure their first league win at Old Trafford in 45 years and their first top-flight victory over United since 2002.
The result marked a significant boost for Daniel Farke’s side, moving them six points clear of the relegation zone with six matches remaining, as they continue their push to retain Premier League status following promotion last season.
Leeds had started brightly despite a recent goal drought, taking the lead early when Okafor finished from close range after a defensive mix-up involving United’s back line.
They doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark following further defensive confusion, with Okafor’s second effort deflecting past the goalkeeper after sustained pressure.
United, who were returning from a 24-day break, struggled for rhythm and were exposed defensively throughout the first half, with Leeds creating multiple clear chances to extend their lead.
The match turned further in Leeds’ favour when Martínez was shown a straight red card in the 56th minute after pulling Calvert-Lewin’s hair following a VAR review.
Despite being a man down, United briefly rallied, with Casemiro heading home from a Bruno Fernandes cross to reduce the deficit.
Leeds, however, withstood late pressure as United pushed for an equaliser, with key saves and goal-line clearances preserving the visitors’ lead.
The defeat ends a difficult run for United, who had lost just once in their previous 10 matches under interim boss Michael Carrick but remain in the hunt for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification.
