Bassey Otu has called for unity and reconciliation within the All Progressives Congress following the conclusion of the party’s primaries and unveiling of candidates in Cross River State.
Speaking on Friday at the APC Secretariat in Calabar, the governor urged party members to place the collective interest of the party and the state above personal ambition, describing the primaries as a demonstration of democratic maturity.
Otu thanked party faithful for their support and said his administration was focused on building enduring institutions and ensuring economic and political stability in the state.
“I did not come to govern North or South. I came to lay a solid foundation for proper economic stability and independence on the sovereign power of the state,” he said.
The governor acknowledged that managing political ambition remained one of the greatest challenges in democratic leadership and commended aspirants who accepted the outcome of the primaries in good faith.
He urged aggrieved party members not to allow disappointment to create division within the party, stressing that the APC had adequate internal mechanisms to resolve disputes.
“There is no better platform than this party,” Otu said, assuring members that consultations would continue to strengthen unity ahead of future political engagements.
The governor also advised younger politicians against desperation and unhealthy rivalry, encouraging them to remain patient and committed to the political process.
“You do not come into politics to become a big man overnight. Go and wait for your time,” he stated.
On governance, Otu said his administration remained committed to completing projects, strengthening institutions, and implementing policies capable of sustaining long-term development in the state.
He further reaffirmed his support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the president as a courageous reformer committed to rebuilding Nigeria’s economy and institutions despite current economic challenges.
The governor also commended security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace and congratulated successful APC candidates, urging them to lead with humility, accountability, and a spirit of service.
Otu expressed confidence that the APC would emerge stronger and more united ahead of future elections in Cross River State and across the country.
