The ancient town of Oyo was alive with excitement as thousands of residents and indigenes gathered to mark the first Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) festival under the reign of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, popularly known as Iku Baba Yeye.
From early morning, crowds filled the Agunpopo praying ground, eager to witness the historic celebration with their new monarch. The Alaafin, accompanied by members of the Oyo Mesi and his royal family, arrived to a rousing welcome, setting the tone for a day of jubilation.
Since ascending the throne, Oba Owoade has quickly earned a reputation as a transformative and visionary leader. Residents at home and abroad praised his unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of his people, citing his good health, wisdom, and deep knowledge of Yoruba history and customs.
The new Alaafin’s reign has already brought notable progress, including the ongoing construction of an ultra-modern health institution, the importation of multi-million-dollar medical equipment, and the empowerment of over 2,000 youths across ten vocations. He has also facilitated the peaceful resolution of longstanding disputes within the community.
The festival’s atmosphere was electric as the royal procession moved from the prayer ground to the palace, where traditional rites were performed. The celebrations featured vibrant dances by the Alaafin, traditional drumming, and panegyrics, drawing thunderous ovations from the crowd.
Residents paid homage to Oba Owoade, describing him as a leader with a clear vision for Oyo and its surrounding communities. Many highlighted his ability to unite people and address challenges with long-term solutions. “He is a man of candor, empathy, and determination, committed to giving his people the tools they need to succeed,” said one community member.
For many, the annual Sallah festival has become more than a religious event—it is now a pilgrimage to reconnect with their roots and celebrate a monarch who embodies the hopes and aspirations of Yorubaland.
The people of Oyo continue to look forward to a reign marked by progress, unity, and prosperity under the leadership of Alaafin Owoade.
