The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has assured members and delegates attending its elective national convention on November 15 in Ibadan, Oyo State, of comprehensive healthcare services throughout the event.
Sen. Ishaq Salman, Acting Chairman of the Convention Medical Sub-Committee, gave the assurance during the committee’s inaugural meeting in Abuja on Friday. He said preparations were underway to provide free medical services and emergency care for the estimated 6,000 participants expected at the convention.
Salman, a medical professional with 45 years of experience, described the medical team as crucial to the success of the event, given the large turnout anticipated.
“Health is wealth. With that large number, we expect some people may have hidden ailments. The treatment and even the provisional drugs are going to be free for our members — they don’t need to pay anything,” he said.
He added that the sub-committee plans to partner with at least two hospitals near the Adamasingba Stadium, the venue of the convention, to handle referrals and emergencies beyond on-site capacity.
According to him, the health initiative will also give delegates an opportunity to check their health status and identify possible underlying conditions, as many Nigerians often neglect regular medical check-ups.
Salman assured that the sub-committee has adequate professional manpower, including doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, and other healthcare experts. He also disclosed plans for an assessment trip to Ibadan to inspect existing facilities, including the stadium clinic, and make necessary upgrades.
The sub-committee’s Secretary, Jonah Ogbaje, said collaboration with the Red Cross, private hospitals, pharmaceutical firms, and major laboratories would ensure a strong referral system for complex cases.
Sen. Ben Obi, Secretary of the Main Convention Committee, commended the medical sub-committee for its vital role, urging members to remain vigilant throughout the event.
“At conventions, because of the large number of delegates, there are always cases of people feeling unwell. Your committee must ensure nothing goes wrong with any PDP member attending the Ibadan convention. You have a duty to be on alert round the clock,” Obi said.
