Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has called for the arrest and prosecution of individuals promoting genocidal threats against Igbos in Lagos. This comes amidst a surge in social media posts with a hashtag urging Igbos to vacate Lagos and other South-West states.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, expressed deep concern over the ultimatum issued to the Igbos, labeling it as profoundly troubling.
“Immediate action should be taken to investigate, arrest, and prosecute those behind this heinous agenda, serving as a deterrent to others who might consider pursuing similar paths that threaten our national security and unity,” Obi stated.
He further warned against the genocidal threats posted on X (formerly Twitter) targeting the Igbo tribe, calling for their relocation. Obi emphasized that such rhetoric endangers national unity and violates the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country. He urged authorities to demonstrate leadership by urgently condemning such divisive language.
“The government and security agencies must act swiftly to protect this fundamental principle and ensure that every Nigerian can live free from fear of discrimination or persecution. We must not allow our present challenges to drive wedges among us,” Obi asserted.
He appealed to all Nigerians to stand united against divisive rhetoric and to promote unity, tolerance, and understanding, stressing that “Our future depends on our ability to live and work together harmoniously.”
Obi’s call underscores the necessity for immediate and decisive action to safeguard the rights and security of all Nigerians, reinforcing the need for national cohesion in the face of growing tensions.
