Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called for forgiveness and unity among Nigerians in a heartfelt message celebrating the 90th birthday of former military leader, General Yakubu Gowon. Obi’s comments, made via a series of tweets on Saturday, emphasized the importance of moving past the divisions caused by Nigeria’s civil war and working towards national reconciliation.
In his congratulatory message, Obi praised Gowon for his leadership during a time of national crisis, saying, “Your life of service to our great nation stands as one of sacrifice, leadership, and unity.” He also expressed hope that Gowon’s legacy would inspire efforts to build a more united and prosperous Nigeria.
However, Obi acknowledged that his message had sparked mixed reactions from some Nigerians, particularly those still affected by the trauma of the 1967-1970 civil war. In a follow-up tweet titled “Why I Congratulated Gen. Gowon at 90,” Obi explained that his message was intended to promote the “hope of forgiveness” and help the country move forward from its darkest period.
“As a leader committed to providing direction for Nigeria to move away from our past shortcomings, including the civil war, I felt it necessary to show that the ultimate heroism is forgiving the enemy and moving forward,” Obi said. He pointed out that Nigeria had made significant strides toward reconciliation, citing the national burial of Biafra leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, during his tenure as governor of Anambra State in 2012.
Drawing from his Christian faith, Obi quoted biblical passages on forgiveness, noting that while anger and bitterness are common responses to cruelty, they only fuel division and conflict. He urged Nigerians to embrace forgiveness, which he said “sets the person doing it free” and helps foster peace and justice.
Obi concluded by asking those hurt by his message to understand his intentions, urging them to join him in creating a Nigeria where hate and vengeance give way to justice and good governance. He emphasized that the nation’s future depends on true peace and unity, which can only flourish through reconciliation and forgiveness.
