Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, describing it as likely his final run for Nigeria’s highest political office.
In a video message shared via LP’s WhatsApp platforms, Obi addressed young Nigerians directly, reaffirming his commitment to the party and dismissing recent speculation about a possible defection or alliance with other opposition leaders.
“I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party,” Obi said, quashing rumours of a planned coalition involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi, who will turn 65 in 2027, suggested this may be his last attempt at the presidency. “I believe in giving room for new leadership. After 2027, I want to step back and contribute in other ways,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of instigating divisions within the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a strategy to weaken the opposition ahead of the next general election.
“What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government. Quote me anywhere. These crises are not organic; they are manufactured by those in power,” Obi asserted.
He lamented the current political climate, contrasting it with the more conciliatory approach to internal party disputes during the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. According to him, the deliberate destabilisation of opposition parties threatens democratic integrity.
“You can’t have a democracy without strong opposition,” Obi said, calling on Nigerians—especially the youth—to remain politically active, vote, and demand transparency from leaders.
Obi also advocated for electoral reforms, including age limits for candidates seeking elective office, as part of efforts to encourage generational leadership transitions.
His declaration has re-energized supporters of the Labour Party and confirmed his continued relevance in the race for 2027, setting the stage for what is expected to be a fiercely contested presidential campaign.
