Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran to end the Middle East conflict, describing it as the result of encouraging efforts in dialogue and negotiation.
Speaking during his weekly audience at the Vatican, the pontiff expressed gratitude to all parties involved in facilitating the talks and voiced hope that the agreement would contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region.
“I hope that this agreement will contribute to strengthening mutual trust, security, and stability in the Middle East by promoting paths of dialogue and cooperation between peoples,” the Pope said.
The 70-year-old leader of the Catholic Church praised the diplomatic efforts that led to the deal, which was announced earlier this week by the United States and Iran.
Pope Leo also turned attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, describing recent developments as painful and renewing his call for dialogue aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.
He lamented the continued loss of lives and destruction caused by the war, noting the impact on civilians, emergency responders, places of worship, and cultural heritage sites.
“So many innocent victims, rescuers killed, churches and cultural heritage sites devastated by flames,” he said.
The Pope expressed solidarity with those affected by the conflict, including bereaved families, the injured, and humanitarian workers who continue to assist victims despite the violence.
“I am close to those mourning their loved ones, to the injured, and to those who, amidst the violence, continue to serve life with courage,” he added.
The Ukraine conflict, triggered by Russia’s invasion in 2022, remains Europe’s deadliest war since World War II and has continued for more than four years.
