Prices of rams have risen sharply in Kebbi State ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, leaving many residents unable to make purchases despite the availability of livestock in major markets.
A survey of livestock markets in the state, including Ambursa and Kalgo, showed that rams were in steady supply, but patronage remained low due to affordability challenges.
At the markets, small-sized rams were sold for between N100,000 and N200,000, while medium-sized ones went for N300,000 to N500,000. Larger rams were priced as high as N600,000 to N1 million, depending on size and breed.
Some residents said the current prices were significantly higher than in previous years, forcing many families to postpone their purchases.
A buyer, Ibrahim Sulaiman, who spoke at Ambursa market, said the cost was beyond the reach of many households.
“The prices are too high this year. We are hoping they will come down as Sallah approaches because many families cannot afford to buy now,” he said.
Another resident, Umar Aliero, said economic pressures had forced him to delay his purchase.
“There are many responsibilities ahead of the celebration. Buying a ram at the current price is difficult for many families,” he said.
Livestock dealer Sale Unabale attributed the price increase to rising transportation costs, higher feeding expenses, and insecurity affecting supply routes across northern Nigeria and neighbouring areas.
He noted that some traders had begun opening temporary ram markets in parts of Birnin Kebbi, while others now display animals in residential areas and roadside locations in search of buyers.
According to him, the rising cost of maintaining livestock has further contributed to the price hike.
