officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) were questioned by the House of Representatives over allegations of bribery involving controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky. The allegations arose following his conviction for naira abuse in April.
Both the EFCC and NCoS denied claims that Bobrisky paid N15 million to drop money laundering charges against him or that he received preferential treatment while serving his sentence. Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison on April 5, 2024, and was released on August 5, 2024.
The investigation was prompted by social media claims made by influencer VeryDarkMan, who released an audio recording allegedly from Bobrisky, where he claimed to have served his sentence in a private apartment arranged by an influential figure. This led to the suspension of two senior NCoS officials involved in his case.
During the hearing, NCoS officials explained that Bobrisky had been kept in a separate cell due to his unique physical features and had made personal arrangements for food. They also confirmed his transfer to the Kirikiri Maximum Security Centre for security reasons.
The EFCC defended the decision to drop certain charges, stating that Bobrisky had pleaded guilty to others. The House Committee adjourned the hearing indefinitely, awaiting further evidence.
