Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on the people of Badagry to preserve the legacy of the late Akran of Badagry, His Imperial Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, describing him as a symbol of unity, peace, and cultural heritage.
Sanwo-Olu made the call on Saturday during a funeral outing thanksgiving service held in honour of the late monarch at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral, Badagry. The event was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and members of the royal family.
The governor said the late Akran was a stabilising force whose reign was marked by wisdom, accessibility, and dedication to his people.
“He was a constant, unshakeable figure of unity, whose palace was always open to his people and whose voice was always measured and just,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He urged residents not to allow grief to overshadow the late monarch’s legacy, but to continue preserving Badagry’s traditions and historical identity. According to him, the best tribute to the late king is to uphold the values he lived for and sustain the cultural heritage of the kingdom.
Sanwo-Olu also described the late monarch as a teacher, journalist, statesman, and father figure who dedicated his life to preserving Badagry’s history and promoting its cultural significance.
“Do not let grief consume what he built. The best tribute you can offer is to continue the work, preserve the monuments, uphold traditions, and raise children to know the covenant of this ancient land,” he said.
The governor also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I Cultural Park in Badagry, in honour of the late monarch.
In his sermon, the Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Sunday Ola Makinde, described the late Akran as a hospitable and devoted leader who served both God and his people faithfully, urging citizens to reflect on their legacy and prepare for eternity.
He also commended ongoing infrastructural projects in Lagos State, including rail development and road construction, while urging continued support for major federal projects in the region.
