The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has mourned the death of Oba Babatunde Akran, the Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, Paramount Ruler of Badagry Kingdom and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, who passed away at the age of 89.
In a statement on Monday, issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu described Oba Akran’s passing as a “great loss” to the people of Badagry, Lagos State, and Nigeria, highlighting his long-standing impact as a respected traditional ruler.
“On behalf of my wife, the government and people of Lagos, I commiserate with the people of Badagry, the late Oba’s family, friends, associates and traditional institutions on the transition of Oba Babatunde Akran,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor recalled Oba Akran’s nearly 49-year reign, noting his wisdom, dedication to cultural preservation, and advocacy for the development of Badagry. He emphasized the monarch’s efforts in promoting unity, tourism, historical sites, and cultural festivals, both nationally and internationally.
“Oba Akran left a lasting legacy as the custodian of Badagry’s traditions, customs, and cultural heritage. He served as a stabilizing force, uniting diverse interests within his kingdom and attracting growth and development to the ancient town,” Sanwo-Olu added.
The governor prayed for God’s comfort for the royal family, the people of Badagry, and Lagos State to bear the loss, urging that the late monarch’s contributions be immortalized.
Oba Akran’s death marks the end of an era for Badagry, where he was celebrated as a pillar of tradition, development, and community service.
