Award-winning journalist and public administrator, ’Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, has formally declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
In an open letter dated February 26, 2026, Sarafa-Yusuf said her decision followed “deep reflection and wide consultation,” adding that she opted for a public declaration to remain focused on responsibility rather than political theatrics.
She described her aspiration as a “managed transition option” anchored on stability, unity and institutional balance, if elected to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun.
“I am presenting myself as the safest option. I bring experience working with government institutions and processes, broad appeal across Ogun State, and calm under pressure,” she stated.
Sarafa-Yusuf emphasised continuity, noting her cordial relationship with the outgoing governor and leader of her party. “Continuity matters. Order matters. Transitions matter,” she wrote.
Addressing zoning debates, particularly calls for power to shift to Ogun West, she cautioned against what she termed “unmanaged grievance,” stressing the need for inclusion without destabilising the state.
The governorship hopeful recalled her previous attempt in 2022, when she did not secure her party’s ticket, stating that she accepted the outcome without disrupting party structures.
On gender representation, she acknowledged that Nigeria has yet to elect a female governor but maintained that her ambition is driven by competence rather than symbolism.
If elected, Sarafa-Yusuf pledged result-oriented governance, consolidation of Ogun’s industrial growth, youth empowerment, infrastructure modernisation, and strengthened public trust in government.
Ogun State, regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading industrial hubs due to its proximity to Lagos and expanding infrastructure base, will elect a new governor in 2027 as Abiodun completes his second term.
