Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has been discharged from hospital after undergoing medical tests in the capital, Riyadh, with authorities describing the results as reassuring.
In a statement carried by state media on Friday, the Royal Court said the 90-year-old monarch “left the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh today after undergoing medical tests that proved reassuring.” His admission had been announced earlier the same day.
Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest crude oil exporter, has long sought to limit speculation surrounding the health of King Salman, who has ruled since 2015. While he remains head of state, his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, named heir in 2017, serves as the kingdom’s de facto ruler.
Details about the king’s health are rarely disclosed, though he has undergone several medical procedures in recent years. In 2024, the Royal Court said he recovered from lung infections. He was hospitalised in May 2022 for a colonoscopy and additional tests, remaining under medical care for just over a week. Earlier that year, he was admitted to replace the battery of his pacemaker following what state media described as successful tests.
In 2020, King Salman also underwent surgery to remove his gall bladder.
