Sierra Leone has formally joined the International Energy Forum (IEF), marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its role in global energy dialogue. The agreement was signed on Tuesday during the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 conference.
The deal, endorsed by IEF Secretary General Jassim AlShirawi and Foday B. L. Mansaray, Director General of Sierra Leone’s Petroleum Directorate, cements the nation’s membership in the intergovernmental body, which champions energy security, market transparency, and equitable energy transitions.
“It is a pleasure and honor to welcome Sierra Leone as a member of the IEF,” AlShirawi said. “We want to give Africa a stronger voice in addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the energy sector.”
The move coincides with Sierra Leone’s renewed push to expand its oil, gas, and energy industries. The country is preparing to launch its first offshore drilling program since 2012, alongside a new licensing round scheduled for October 2025. In parallel, it is developing a domestic refinery to bolster fuel security.
Mansaray described the accession as a strategic step for the country. “This is a momentous occasion for us, and we are excited to be part of the IEF where we can share our ideas. We look forward to a long-term partnership,” he said.
By joining the IEF, Sierra Leone gains a platform to engage directly with global partners, reinforcing its ambition to position itself as an active player in international energy cooperation.
