Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi were on target as Switzerland defeated Canada 2–1 on Wednesday to finish top of World Cup Group B, while the co-hosts secured a historic place in the knockout stage.
The decisive clash in Vancouver saw both sides enter knowing victory would secure first place in the group and a more favourable knockout draw.
After a goalless first half, Switzerland took control early in the second period when Vargas opened the scoring, before Manzambi doubled the lead shortly after the restart with his third goal of the tournament.
Canada responded through Promise David, who struck in the final 15 minutes to set up a tense finish, but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser despite late pressure from set pieces.
The result saw Switzerland finish top of the group with seven points, while Canada ended second on four points — enough to secure a first-ever progression to the last 32 of the World Cup.
Earlier, Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Qatar 3–1 to finish third in the group with four points, leaving their qualification hopes dependent on results elsewhere.
The match also featured an emotional moment before kick-off as Canada midfielder Ismael Kone appeared on the pitch in a wheelchair after suffering a leg fracture in the previous match, receiving a standing ovation from fans at BC Place.
Switzerland had earlier chances through Breel Embolo, while goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made key saves to keep the European side level in the first half.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch introduced several changes in search of a comeback, but Switzerland held firm to secure top spot in the group.
