Former Sokoto State governor and senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Tambuwal, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to his ward chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward of Tambuwal Local Government Area, the former governor announced his resignation from the PDP with immediate effect.
Tambuwal said the decision followed extensive consultations with political associates and supporters, citing persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the party as key reasons for his departure.
According to him, the ongoing conflicts within the PDP had weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party, making it difficult for him to continue as a member.
Despite his exit, Tambuwal expressed appreciation to the PDP for providing him opportunities to serve Nigeria in both the legislative and executive arms of government.
Following his resignation, the senator confirmed that he and his political associates have formally joined the ADC, which he described as a platform aligned with his vision of integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and national development.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to the service of Nigeria and to the principles of democracy, justice, and national unity.
Tambuwal rose to national prominence as a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency for three terms before emerging as Speaker of the House between 2011 and 2015.
During his time as Speaker, he defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in October 2014. He later contested and won the 2015 governorship election in Sokoto State on the APC platform.
In August 2018, after consultations with political stakeholders in the state, Tambuwal returned to the PDP. Ahead of the 2023 general elections, he sought the party’s presidential ticket but stepped down during the primary election to support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who eventually emerged as the party’s candidate.
After completing his tenure as governor in 2023, Tambuwal returned to the National Assembly, winning election as senator representing Sokoto South under the PDP before his latest defection to the ADC.
