President Bola Tinubu has tasked Acting Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu with tackling banditry, terrorism, and other security challenges across Nigeria.
The directive was issued on Wednesday during Disu’s decoration as Acting IGP, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun. Speaking through his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President said, “Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them.”
Tinubu described Disu’s appointment as timely and urged him to restore public confidence in the police by collaborating closely with other security agencies. He also called on the Acting IGP to advance the security objectives of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor. Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level, and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority,” Tinubu said, expressing confidence in Disu’s discipline, operational experience, and leadership capacity.
The President assured Disu of his administration’s full support in using his experience to strengthen national security and restore peace.
Before his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He previously held positions as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and in the Federal Capital Territory under Egbetokun.
Disu, a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, also headed the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Response Team, a role once held by Abba Kyari.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. Over his career, he has served as Divisional Police Officer in several locations, including Ago Iwoye (Ogun State), Ikare and Owo (Ondo State), and Elimbu and Elelenwo (Rivers State).
