U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin reached an agreement on what officials described as “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine during their summit in Alaska, a senior White House envoy said Sunday.
Speaking on CNN, special envoy Steve Witkoff said Russia had offered unspecified concessions on five contested Ukrainian regions, with particular focus on Donetsk. “We agreed to robust security guarantees that I would describe as game-changing,” Witkoff noted. He added that the details, especially concerning Donetsk, would be finalized in discussions scheduled for Monday.
Trump is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alongside several European leaders in Washington on Monday to advance talks on ending Russia’s three-and-a-half-year invasion of Ukraine.
The Alaska summit marked a significant shift in U.S. strategy, with Trump dropping his earlier push for an immediate ceasefire—long a central demand of Washington—despite Ukraine and its European allies not being invited to the meeting.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking on NBC, clarified that a ceasefire “is not off the table,” but emphasized that “what we ultimately are aiming for is an end to this war.”
In a brief message on his Truth Social platform, Trump hailed “BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA,” without providing further details.
European leaders set to join Zelensky in Washington include British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
