A large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s southern Krasnodar region has left one person dead, another injured and triggered a fire at an oil refinery, regional authorities said on Sunday.
Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said the region came under a “massive” drone assault, with falling debris damaging several residential buildings.
“Krasnodar region came under a massive enemy drone attack. Sadly, one person was killed,” Kondratyev said in a statement posted on Telegram, adding that another person sustained injuries and received medical attention.
He also confirmed that the attack sparked a fire at an oil refinery, while a power line and gas pipeline were damaged.
The affected facility, the Slavyansk-on-Kuban oil refinery, is one of the largest in southern Russia. Located near the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula, the refinery has been targeted on several occasions since the outbreak of the war.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said its air defence systems intercepted 213 Ukrainian drones across more than a dozen regions, including the capital, Moscow.
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Russian energy infrastructure, describing the attacks as retaliation for Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians and critical energy facilities. Kyiv has intensified such operations in recent months in an effort to weaken Moscow’s economic capacity to sustain its military campaign.
Russia, meanwhile, has continued its near-daily aerial bombardment of Ukraine since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022, in what has become Europe’s deadliest conflict since the Second World War.
