The United Nations has urged women worldwide to stand firm in the face of adversity as the world marks International Women’s Day 2025 on March 8.
The UN emphasized that the occasion provides an opportunity to push for global equality and reaffirm commitments to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which remains a key framework for gender equality 30 years after its adoption.
“On International Women’s Day (March 8), we make a bold call for action for all women and girls worldwide. The world remains deeply unequal, and this day is a chance to rise, demand action, and deliver on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to make the world equal and better for everyone,” the UN stated on its official X handle.
The organization highlighted the progress made in advancing women’s rights, noting that 89% of governments prioritize ending violence against women, with 193 countries implementing legal measures against gender-based violence. Data shows that nations with domestic violence laws report fewer cases of violence against women.
Additionally, the UN noted significant progress in education parity, efforts to bridge the gender gap in science and technology, and the promotion of better pay and safer working conditions for care workers in 32% of countries globally.
Furthermore, 112 countries now have a national plan to involve women in peace and security processes, a significant increase from just 19 in 2010.
The theme for this year’s celebration is: “Invest in Women, Accelerate Action.”
