Unity Bank Plc has unveiled plans to launch a financial education app for children and teenagers, aimed at promoting a savings culture and equipping young Nigerians with tools for financial success.
The announcement was made during a World Savings Day training held at Emerald Fields School, Calabar, Cross River State, as part of the Bank’s nationwide campaign to mark the global event.
Unity Bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Tomi Somefun, represented by the Chief Compliance Officer, Mrs. Patricia Ahunanya, highlighted the importance of teaching financial literacy early. She revealed that the app would help students set SMART financial goals, understand compound interest, and manage money prudently.
“Financial literacy lays the groundwork for a secure future. By teaching young people budgeting, distinguishing between needs and wants, and embracing delayed gratification, we empower them to take control of their financial journeys,” Somefun explained.
The app, designed specifically for children and teenagers, will allow users to set savings goals, track progress, and develop sustainable financial habits, aligning with Unity Bank’s commitment to youth development and financial inclusion.
The training session in Calabar was one of 16 simultaneous workshops conducted across Nigeria, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Bankers’ Committee, and Junior Achievement Nigeria. Participants engaged in interactive lessons on earning, budgeting, and responsible spending, while exploring the principles of borrowing and saving.
Unity Bank’s initiative aligns with the CBN’s strategy to deepen financial inclusion and ensure young Nigerians are equipped with essential financial skills. Celebrated annually on October 31, World Savings Day underscores the importance of savings and financial awareness globally.
With training sessions spanning all six geopolitical zones, Unity Bank continues to reinforce its dedication to youth empowerment and capacity building. The forthcoming app promises to be a key tool in fostering a generation of financially savvy Nigerians.
