The University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, has formally launched the Centre for African Studies in Economics and Technology (CASET), a new initiative aimed at tackling Africa’s socio-economic challenges through research, partnerships, and innovative policy development.
The Centre, inaugurated on UWE’s Bristol campus, is envisioned as a hub for academic collaboration and policy discourse, bringing together universities, governments, and private sector leaders to promote sustainable growth across the African continent.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, who was named Patron of the Centre, delivered the keynote address at the launch. His leadership in digital innovation and entrepreneurship was commended by UWE Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Steven West, who described Sanwo-Olu as a transformative figure capable of bringing critical insight to the Centre’s mission.
“As Patron, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s involvement is expected to deepen research cooperation and policy alignment between Lagos State and UWE Bristol,” said Professor West. “This appointment also reinforces our shared commitment to innovation, capacity building, and Africa’s development.”
The Centre will further enhance UWE’s growing international footprint, particularly in Nigeria, where the university has existing academic partnerships. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s appointment signals an intent to foster stronger UK-Africa ties, with a focus on inclusive economic advancement and knowledge exchange.
