The White House on Friday sharply criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee after it awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, bypassing U.S. President Donald Trump.
“The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding that “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”
Since beginning his second term in January, Trump has repeatedly argued that he deserves the Peace Prize for his self-proclaimed role in resolving global conflicts — claims widely viewed by observers as exaggerated.
On the eve of the announcement, Trump reiterated that his administration’s facilitation of a ceasefire phase in Gaza marked “the eighth war” he had ended, though he added, “Whatever they do is fine. I didn’t do it for that — I did it because I’ve saved a lot of lives.”
However, Nobel experts in Oslo had dismissed Trump’s chances, emphasizing that his “America First” policies conflict with the principles outlined in Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will, which established the Peace Prize to honor efforts promoting international cooperation and disarmament.
