Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has announced a relief package of N100 million for flood victims in Gummi Local Government Area, following a devastating flood caused by heavy rainfall last week. The announcement was made on Saturday during the governor’s on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected communities.
Expressing his sympathy for the victims, Governor Lawal also ordered the immediate distribution of 10,000 bags of assorted grains, including rice, maize, and millet, as well as mosquito nets and blankets, to those affected. “Today, I am in Gummi Local Government Area to offer my condolences and conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the communities devastated by flooding,” Lawal stated.
The governor emphasized the state’s commitment to providing timely assistance. “I want to inform you that 10,000 bags of food have been dispatched and are en route to Gummi for distribution. Additionally, the Zamfara State Government is providing N100 million in support to the affected victims. We will also allocate lands away from flood-prone areas to ensure safe resettlement for those displaced,” he added.
In addressing long-term solutions to flooding in the area, Governor Lawal pledged to undertake the construction of new drainage systems, repair existing dams, and consider the construction of additional dams to mitigate future risks. The governor’s visit included stops in Gummi town and the Gayari community, where he assessed the extent of the flood damage firsthand.
The Emir of Gummi, Justice Hassan Lawal (retired), who welcomed the governor, provided a detailed account of the flood’s impact on the local government. “After consultations with experts, we believe a permanent solution is achievable. An estimated 10,291 households have been affected, and we are confident that the governor’s visit will bring further relief and solutions,” the Emir remarked.
