Ukrainian forces, in a surprise move, deployed thousands of troops in an operation that marks a shift in the battlefield dynamics after months of slow Russian advances in eastern Ukraine. A Ukrainian security official, speaking to AFP, confirmed that Kyiv had seized the initiative, advancing up to 30 kilometers (20 miles) into Russian territory in some areas.
In response to the escalating situation, China’s Foreign Ministry urged all parties involved to adhere to “three principles for de-escalating the situation.” A spokesperson for the ministry outlined these principles as: “no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting, and no fueling of the flames by any party.”
“China will continue to maintain communication with the international community and play a constructive role in promoting a political solution to the crisis,” the spokesperson added.
While China maintains its stance as a neutral party in the conflict and asserts that it is not providing lethal assistance to either side, it remains a close political and economic ally of Russia. This relationship has led NATO members to label Beijing as a “decisive enabler” of the war, a conflict that China has never condemned.
Last year, China released a paper advocating for a “political settlement” to the conflict, a proposal that was met with criticism from Western nations for allegedly allowing Russia to retain much of the territory it has occupied in Ukraine.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, China’s call for restraint underscores its delicate balancing act in maintaining its alliance with Russia while positioning itself as a mediator on the global stage.
