In the election, the immediate past vice chairman of the association, Ibrahim Jibril, was declared the winner by the returning officer, Mannir Bature. Jibril secured 183 votes, defeating his closest rival, Usman Suleiman, who garnered 12 votes. Jibril has since claimed the chairmanship of the NMA in Zamfara State.
The association’s annual general meeting began on a peaceful note, including a scientific conference. However, tensions rose during the election of new state officials, following the expiration of the outgoing executive led by Sanusi Bello.
Returning officer Mannir Bature, who also serves as the National Publicity Secretary of the NMA, announced an adjournment of the election session to 5 p.m., allowing delegates to participate virtually. When they reconvened, the election proceeded, with most candidates running unopposed. However, the chairmanship position saw a contest between three candidates: Ibrahim Jibril, Mohammed Abubakar, and Usman Suleiman. Jibril emerged victorious with 183 votes.
The national leadership of the NMA has recognized Jibril as the legitimate chairman. He has pledged to lead with an open-door policy, ensuring transparency and accountability, and to include all members in the association’s activities.
However, Usman Suleiman, backed by some senior members of the association, has also laid claim to the chairmanship, urging members to support his leadership in taking the association to new heights. Suleiman attempted to assert his authority by visiting the state secretariat, where he claimed to be the new chairman but was denied access.
The situation has left the NMA in Zamfara State in a state of uncertainty, with two factions now claiming leadership.
