Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and France’s President Emmanuel Macron signed two pivotal agreements on Thursday in Paris, solidifying a partnership aimed at advancing critical infrastructure development and ensuring long-term agriculture and food security.
The agreements were finalized during an economic forum held at the Palais des Élysée, as part of President Tinubu’s state visit. The event was attended by business leaders, industry executives, state governors, and top officials from both nations.
Major Developments in Banking and Infrastructure
During the forum, Tony Elumelu, Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group, and Antoine Armand, France’s Minister of Economy, Finance, and Industry, signed an agreement to facilitate UBA’s entry into the French banking sector. Zenith Bank also launched its services in Paris, signaling growing Nigerian-French financial cooperation.
Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and Armand signed a Letter of Intent outlining commitments to invest over €300 million in critical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, agriculture, renewable energy, and human capital development. The package, designed to benefit all of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, also emphasized removing fiscal barriers, safeguarding labor rights, and fostering strategic project collaboration.
In another agreement, Edun and Rémi Rioux, CEO of the French Development Agency (AFD), signed a Letter of Intent to support Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This initiative focuses on driving economic growth through sustainable urban infrastructure, transportation, housing, STEM education, agriculture, food security, and healthcare.
AFD pledged to fund agro-logistic hubs and projects aimed at boosting energy access, promoting sustainable agriculture, and supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in key sectors. Nigeria, in turn, committed to ensuring the timely and efficient implementation of these initiatives.
Joint Vision for Development
At a joint press conference, President Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening cooperation with France in areas such as food security, energy, solid minerals, education, and defense.
“This partnership marks a new chapter in our relationship, driven by mutual commitment to sustainable development and shared prosperity,” Tinubu said.
President Macron hailed the agreements as a milestone in Nigerian-French relations, pledging France’s continued support for Nigeria’s development priorities.
Economic and Diplomatic Milestone
The agreements and commitments made during President Tinubu’s three-day state visit highlight the deepening ties between the two nations. With significant financial and technical backing from France, Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape stands to benefit from enhanced infrastructure, agricultural advancements, and strengthened bilateral trade relations.
