Wema Bank, known for pioneering Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT, joined the global community in commemorating International Fraud Awareness Week 2024 with a seminar held at its headquarters in Lagos on November 20.
Themed “Share A Story, Stop A Scam,” the week-long initiative aims to raise awareness about the escalating threat of fraud and inspire individuals and institutions to take proactive steps to minimize its impact.
In a statement, Wema Bank highlighted its ongoing commitment to equipping customers with tools to detect and mitigate fraud, emphasizing its dedication to education and action through its anti-fraud campaigns.
Representing the bank’s CEO, Moruf Oseni, Executive Director of Retail and Digital Business, Tunde Mabawonku, underscored the institution’s resolve to fight fraud amid the growing sophistication of digital threats.
“Fraud and scams are evolving rapidly, especially with the rise of digital banking,” Mabawonku said. “At Wema Bank, we recognize our responsibility to stay ahead of these challenges. While we continuously innovate and strengthen our security framework, we also prioritize educating our customers to complement these efforts and maintain their financial security.”
He further stressed the need for collective vigilance, stating, “Awareness is not just a one-week affair; it’s a lifelong commitment. Fraudsters are becoming increasingly creative, and it’s crucial for everyone to stay informed about new tactics and share knowledge to outpace these threats.”
