The arraignment of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello at the Federal High Court in Abuja was postponed on Friday due to the absence of his legal team.
Bello, who faces a 19-count charge of money laundering amounting to ₦80.2 billion brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), appeared before Justice Emeka Nwite.
At the proceedings, EFCC counsel Kemi Phinero moved for the charges to be read and Bello’s plea taken. However, the former governor informed the court that he had been notified of the arraignment late on November 28, leaving insufficient time to contact his lawyers.
In a brief ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized the importance of ensuring fair hearing. “The warrant for the defendant’s arrest cannot override his right to legal representation,” the judge stated. He directed that Bello’s counsel be notified and adjourned the case to December 13 for a hearing on abridgment of time and possible arraignment.
Justice Nwite also ordered that Bello remain in EFCC custody until the next hearing.
Bello, dressed in a white kaftan and cap, arrived at the courthouse under tight security. This appearance follows his arraignment just two days earlier before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on a separate 16-count charge.
The EFCC’s charges against the former governor mark a significant step in its ongoing efforts to combat financial crimes in public office.
