Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, has sentenced Aisha Wakil, widely known as “Mama Boko Haram,” alongside two others to five years imprisonment each for conspiracy, cheating, and providing false information.
The ruling, delivered on Thursday, followed the re-arraignment of Wakil, the Chief Executive Officer of Complete Care and Aid Foundation, along with Programme Manager Tahiru Saidu Daura and Country Director Prince Lawal Shoyode. The trio faced four amended charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) involving fraudulent activities amounting to ₦6 million.
Details of the Conviction
One of the charges revealed that the defendants had dishonestly induced a petitioner, Alhaji Bukar Kachalla of Abks Ventures Limited, to deliver a Toyota Camry 2012 model worth ₦6 million under the pretense of executing a contract. The EFCC established that the vehicle was neither purchased nor returned, prompting legal action.
Prosecutors Mukhtar Ahmed and Shamsudeeb Saka presented three witnesses and submitted multiple documents as evidence against the defendants.
In her judgment, Justice Kumaliya found the defendants guilty and sentenced them to five years imprisonment each without the option of a fine. Additionally, she ordered them to jointly restitute the outstanding ₦3.5 million to the petitioner. Failure to comply would result in an additional five-year jail term for each convict.
EFCC’s Statement
The EFCC, in a statement issued by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the convictions and reiterated its commitment to prosecuting fraudulent practices. The commission described the case as a clear example of dishonesty under the guise of humanitarian work.
The sentencing highlights the consequences of financial misconduct and reinforces the legal framework protecting victims of fraudulent schemes.
