The management of Dangote Cement Plc in Ibese, Ogun State, has awarded scholarships totaling N16,215,000 to 120 indigent students as part of its 2024 Community Day celebrations. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing the lives of residents in its host communities, which it regards as essential partners in fostering economic growth and national development.
During the event held at the company’s premises, Ibese Plant Manager Mr. Roy Uttam outlined the company’s ongoing efforts to support local communities and reviewed various intervention projects executed over the past year. Themed “Celebrating Resilience through Effective Partnership,” the gathering highlighted Dangote Cement’s appreciation for the backing received from its 16 host communities.
Uttam revealed that the company had undertaken 25 community projects in the past year, including the renovation of health centers, installation of solar-powered boreholes, and initiatives aimed at empowering youth and women. He stated, “As part of the company’s 2024 social investment projects, we are pleased to present scholarships to 120 outstanding and indigent students, along with distributing 55 chest freezers to assist vulnerable women in starting or expanding their businesses.”
These efforts complement a broader welfare program that includes support for 50 elderly individuals and providing agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides to 60 farmers. Additionally, Uttam highlighted the company’s focus on youth empowerment, noting that 30 youths trained in shoe and leather bag making received multimillion-naira starter packs earlier this year, while another 30 are currently undergoing training in plaster of Paris (POP), screeding, and painting.
Despite the challenging economic climate and rising inflation affecting project execution, Uttam affirmed the company’s dedication to completing the remaining projects next year, as many are already in advanced stages. He called for further collaboration with host communities, promising that Dangote Cement would continue to invest in initiatives that support local social and economic development.
Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Adebola Sofela, commended Dangote Group for its significant contributions to improving the lives of residents in host communities. Represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Olu Aikulola, Sofela acknowledged that the company’s interventions complement government efforts to make life easier for rural dwellers. He urged Dangote Cement to ensure that its social projects align with the specific needs of the communities.
Oba Daniel Salako, the Aboro of Iboro, also praised Dangote Cement for its commitment to community development, urging the company to enhance its support while encouraging community members to cooperate with company staff for mutual benefits. The event highlighted Dangote Cement’s role as a key player in the socio-economic landscape of Ogun State, reflecting its ongoing dedication to corporate social responsibility.
