Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged the state government’s support for the successful hosting of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), a continental women’s golf championship scheduled to hold in Abuja from November 2 to 7.

The biennial tournament, which will take place at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, is expected to attract female golfers from 30 African countries competing for their respective nations.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), led by its patron and Iyalode of Lagos, Chief Bintu-Fatima Tinubu.

The governor commended the association for its efforts to promote women’s participation in sports and enhance Africa’s international image.

He expressed enthusiasm for the championship and reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to supporting the event.

Sanwo-Olu also emphasised the importance of integrity, ethical conduct and accountability, urging individuals and organisations to uphold these values in their activities.

He encouraged people to embrace new opportunities regardless of age, noting that it was never too late to pursue meaningful endeavours.

Earlier, LGAN President, Dr Lami Ahmed, said the championship had received endorsements from the National Sports Commission, relevant Senate and House of Representatives committees, and other stakeholders.

She disclosed that the First Lady had also endorsed the event and agreed to participate in its opening and closing ceremonies.

Ahmed said Nigeria secured the hosting rights following a successful bid in Morocco, describing the championship as an opportunity to strengthen the country’s international image, promote tourism, attract investment and stimulate economic growth.

She added that golf promotes discipline, integrity, training and leadership among women, while commending ongoing efforts to advance women’s empowerment and development.
