Lagos State recorded a revenue boost of over $71.6 million during the 2024 festive season, popularly referred to as “Detty December,” underscoring its position as Africa’s leading tourism and entertainment destination.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, shared these figures during a review of the ‘Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report’. Speaking alongside stakeholders, including Tantacom Experimental Projects and MO Africa Consulting, Aregbe noted the remarkable contributions of the tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors.
“Hotels alone generated over $44 million, while short-let apartments contributed more than $13 million, highlighting Lagos’ immense economic potential as a global destination city,” Aregbe stated.
Unparalleled Festive Events Drive Revenue Growth
The 2024 Detty December season featured a wide range of spectacular events, including the Mrs. Universe Africa event, Greater Lagos Fiesta, Spotify Wrapped Concert, Rhythm Unplugged, African Fashion Week, and Fashion Souk, among others. These activities attracted massive crowds from within Lagos, the Nigerian diaspora—commonly referred to as IJGBs (I Just Got Back)—and international tourists.
This vibrant mix of music, fashion, arts, and culinary events not only boosted economic activity but also celebrated Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage on a global stage.
A Platform for Cultural and Economic Impact
Aregbe emphasized that Detty December has become a platform for showcasing Nigerian arts and culture while fostering unity and reinforcing Lagos’ status as a cultural hub. “Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the Ember season playing a key role,” he said.
He credited the achievements to the visionary leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu and the dedication of Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, whose efforts laid the foundation for growth in tourism and culture.
Looking Ahead: Lagos Tourism Rising in 2025
As Lagos prepares for its ‘Tourism is Rising’ campaign in 2025, Aregbe outlined the government’s commitment to building on the success of Detty December. “We will carefully study insights from this season and use key lessons to create more opportunities for Lagosians while ensuring our city remains a beacon of culture, tourism, and economic excellence,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to the people of Lagos, industry stakeholders, performers, and artisans whose creativity and participation were instrumental in the season’s success. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture also played a pivotal role in coordinating and ensuring the events ran smoothly.
With its thriving tourism sector and diverse cultural offerings, Lagos continues to position itself as a global cultural destination, attracting investments and visitors from around the world.
