The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has hinted at a potential resignation amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the proposed N580 billion budget for Nigerian airport runways.
Kuku made the disclosure during an interview on Television Continental on Thursday evening, where she addressed pressing issues within the aviation sector.
“I have stepped on toes, and I am still stepping on toes,” Kuku stated, emphasizing her commitment to transforming Nigeria’s airport systems. “I know I need to do that with caution, but definitely not at the jeopardy of the airport system. If I am tired, I will get out of the job.”
The N580 billion proposal, which has drawn significant public and legislative scrutiny, is earmarked for the reconstruction of 17 runways, perimeter fencing, and other critical infrastructure across Nigeria’s 22 airports.
Defending the budget, Kuku clarified that the funds would address the deteriorating state of infrastructure and ensure safety and compliance with international aviation standards.
“What it means is that we have to reconstruct those runways. The N580 billion I mentioned earlier covers over 17 runways, and it is not just about the runways. It includes perimeter fencing and other necessary infrastructure,” she explained.
Kuku urged critics to consider the high cost of airport development globally. “I have seen commentaries questioning the need for such funds. A simple Google search would show what it takes to build runways, expand taxiways, and undertake other essential airport projects,” she added.
The proposed budget became a subject of heated debate following FAAN’s presentation during a budget defense session at the National Assembly. Stakeholders and lawmakers have raised concerns over the feasibility and justification for the expenditure, fueling public interest in the matter.
Despite the controversy, Kuku remains resolute in her vision to improve the country’s aviation infrastructure, even as she hinted at the possibility of stepping down if circumstances become untenable.
The debate over the N580 billion budget is expected to continue as stakeholders weigh the importance of infrastructure upgrades against financial prudence in a challenging economic environment.
