IMF Chief Warns U.S. Tariffs Threaten Global Growth

By Ayomide Otitoju

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has warned that new tariffs imposed by the United States present a “significant risk” to global economic growth.

In a statement released Thursday, Georgieva expressed concern about the impact of the escalating trade tensions. “These tariffs clearly represent a significant risk to the global outlook at a time of sluggish growth,” she said, urging the US and its trade partners to seek a constructive resolution.

Georgieva cautioned against actions that could further destabilize the global economy and noted that global growth projections—previously estimated at 3.3%—remain below the 3.7% average recorded in the early 2000s. The IMF is expected to release an updated global economic outlook later this month.
