Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has drawn a striking comparison between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Singapore’s founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, lauding Tinubu’s “reform-driven governance” as a transformative force in Nigeria’s development journey.
Speaking on Thursday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit in Abuja, Akume praised the president’s leadership since assuming office in 2023, describing his policy decisions as visionary despite prevailing public discontent over economic hardship.
“In just two years, we have witnessed impactful decisions, strategic reforms, and a clear commitment to national development,” Akume stated. “Mr. President’s leadership reminds us of the legendary Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore — a leader whose foresight, discipline, and tenacity turned a small nation into a global economic powerhouse. This is the calibre of leadership Nigeria is privileged to have today.”
Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first prime minister, governed from 1959 to 1990 and is widely credited with transforming the Southeast Asian city-state from a poor, underdeveloped outpost into one of the most prosperous and efficient countries in the world. His governance model, built on meritocracy, discipline, and strategic long-term planning, is often cited as a global benchmark.
‘Results, Not Mere Promises’
Akume also spoke on the APC’s growing popularity, asserting that Nigerians are aligning with the ruling party due to tangible outcomes rather than campaign rhetoric.
“People are joining our party not because of mere promises but because they are experiencing concrete results,” he said. “They see purpose, mission, and a brighter future ahead. And to those still watching from afar, I say — our doors are wide open.”
He pointed to recent defections from major opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), as evidence of increasing trust in the APC’s governance and inclusive political ideology.
Akume urged party members to begin early mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of unity, dedication, and strategic communication.
“As we look ahead to 2027, now is the time to double down on our efforts,” he said. “We must not only campaign but also mobilise by showcasing the achievements of the APC under the leadership of Mr. President — by amplifying his integrity, foresight, and compassion.”
A Call for Unity and Vision
Concluding his remarks, Akume emphasized the need for collaboration and internal cohesion within the party, stating that the APC represents more than a political entity — it embodies a national vision.
“The APC is not just a party but a vision,” he declared. “With your continued support, that vision will endure and triumph abundantly.”
The summit was attended by President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, APC governors, and other key party stakeholders.
