Young innovators from Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, and Nigeria have unveiled groundbreaking STEM-driven solutions at the ExxonMobil Foundation STEM Africa Regional Finals, held in Cape Town. The competition, implemented by non-profit JA Africa, marked the conclusion of a year-long program featuring quizzes and innovation camps.
The projects were presented during the ExxonMobil Foundation STEM Africa 2025 pre-conference workshop at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025, hosted by ExxonMobil. The session was led by Alvin Abraham, President of the ExxonMobil Foundation; Katrina Fischer, Managing Director, ExxonMobil Angola; and Arne Gibbs, General Manager, ExxonMobil Mozambique.
“Today, we’re continuing to support young individuals in developing innovative, STEM-based solutions to some of the most significant challenges we face,” Abraham said.
The Angolan team introduced a solar-powered system designed to combat marine pollution. The solution integrates photovoltaic panels, a lift, containment net, and recycling unit to remove solid waste from waterways, reduce waterborne diseases, boost tourism, and convert plastic waste into revenue.
Namibia’s team showcased a sustainable aquaponics-inspired system that transforms fish waste into nutrient-rich bio-feed for plants, using a 3D-printed frame. The innovation promotes food security by turning organic waste into valuable agricultural input.
Representing Nigeria, the UltraClean project featured a solar-powered water purification system for schools and homes. Combining sand filtration, charcoal purification, and biochar technology, the solution provides safe drinking water while recycling waste into fertilizer.
Mozambique’s team presented a sanitation and energy innovation that converts human waste into biogas and electricity. Using a carousel and biodigester, the project enhances clean water access, improves sanitation for children, and supports agriculture through irrigation and energy production.
Organizers noted that the finalists demonstrated how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can be harnessed to deliver practical solutions to Africa’s pressing development challenges.
