MTN Group has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first African telecommunications operator to surpass 300 million subscribers across its markets. The achievement was announced by Group President and CEO, Ralph Mupita, during the company’s annual Ambassadors’ Appreciation Dinner.

The feat marks a major success in MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which set the 300 million target as a key performance goal. The Group added 6.2 million new subscribers in 2024 and a further 6.7 million in the first half of 2025, propelling it past the landmark figure.

As of mid-2025, the company’s largest markets include Nigeria with 84.7 million users, Iran with 56 million, and South Africa with 39.8 million subscribers.

While celebrating the milestone, Mupita revealed that MTN is shifting its strategic focus beyond mobile services toward fintech, digital infrastructure, and connected home solutions.

“Our focus now shifts to fintech, digital infrastructure, and the connected home,” Mupita said, noting that the Group’s MoMo mobile money platform will continue to drive financial inclusion in regions underserved by traditional banking.

MTN is also expanding its fibre network and advancing “smart home” offerings such as MTN Sky Premium, positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation.

Mupita added that the company’s growth underscores the critical role of connectivity in driving economic growth and social inclusion across the continent.
