The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is seeking technical equity partners to revive three of its idle refineries, which have remained non-operational despite substantial investments.
Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, disclosed the plan in a post on X on Thursday, emphasizing the need to ensure the refineries run efficiently.
With a combined capacity of 445,000 barrels per day, the refineries, together with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, could position Nigeria to end fuel import dependence and become a net exporter.
“We are looking ahead with optimism to ensure our refineries operate effectively. We are dedicating significant time to a detailed review and are eager to implement our insights,” Ojulari said.
The announcement comes after previous efforts to rehabilitate the moribund refineries. Former NNPC head Mele Kyari had secured $2.5 billion in external contracts aimed at restoring the facilities.
The move signals NNPC’s renewed commitment to boosting local refining capacity and strengthening Nigeria’s energy security.
