Excitement is building across Senegal and the continent as the official countdown clock for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) was unveiled at a vibrant ceremony at Dakar Gare, marking exactly one year until the historic event — the first Olympic competition ever to be held on African soil.
The unveiling, led by OMEGA, a Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner, marks the beginning of the final 365-day countdown to the Games, which will take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026.
In attendance were International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry, OMEGA President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann, Dakar 2026 Youth Organising Committee (YOGOC) President Mamadou Ndiaye, and General Coordinator Ibrahima Wade.
Speaking at the event, IOC President Kirsty Coventry hailed Dakar 2026 as a landmark moment for the Olympic Movement and Africa.
“Dakar 2026 was created from the vision of bringing the Youth Olympic Games to every corner of the world, placing them at the heart of Africa’s transformation,” she said. “We can’t wait to welcome the world’s most promising athletes to a competition that could transform their lives within seconds.”
OMEGA CEO Raynald Aeschlimann reaffirmed the company’s dedication to the Games and its role as Official Timekeeper, providing cutting-edge systems such as photofinish cameras, electronic starting pistols, and quantum timers.
“Dakar 2026 marks a significant moment for the global growth of sport,” he said. “We’re proud to bring our timing expertise to an event that will spotlight emerging athletic talent from around the world.”
YOGOC President Mamadou Ndiaye described the clock unveiling as a “symbol of growing anticipation” as Senegal prepares to host athletes from around the globe, while Ibrahima Wade, YOGOC General Coordinator, noted that “the countdown gives everyone renewed motivation for the year ahead.”
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will feature approximately 2,700 athletes aged under 17, competing in 153 events across three venues: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly. The Games aim to blend world-class sporting competition with Africa’s rich cultural energy, representing a new chapter in Olympic history.
