The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused certain political leaders of misleading Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and called for adherence to agreements reached before President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking to supporters in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, Wike said the accord, signed by key stakeholders—including former Rivers Governor Peter Odili, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, leaders of major political parties, and other top officials—had not been respected by Fubara. He accused some actors of deliberately misinforming the public, describing such actions as irresponsible and potentially destabilising.
“People think they can just say anything in politics and it will not matter. It matters. If it did not matter yesterday, it will matter today, and if not today, it will matter tomorrow,” Wike warned.
The former governor emphasised that the agreement was collectively endorsed, with all parties freely signing before later contradicting the position they had agreed to. He described Rivers as a critical political force in the South-South and urged leaders to speak the truth on matters affecting peace and stability.
Wike also recalled past attempts to dismantle the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in the state, noting that such efforts ultimately failed. He reaffirmed that his political decisions are guided by principles of equity, fairness, and justice rather than personal interest or party loyalty.
He commended the people of Ogu/Bolo for their steadfast support and praised President Tinubu for appointing Rivers State indigenes to key federal positions, describing the actions as a demonstration of sincerity and commitment to agreements reached with stakeholders.
Also addressing the gathering, Chairman of the Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress, George Sekibo, criticised Governor Fubara as ungrateful and declared support for Wike, stating that Ijaw leaders would work to prevent the Governor’s re-election.
Boma Iyaye, Executive Director of Finance at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), assured Wike of Ogu/Bolo residents’ continued support and commended him for facilitating appointments and development projects.
Earlier, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Chairman, Hon. Vincent Nemieboka, highlighted several projects attracted to the area by Wike and pledged the loyalty of the council and residents. The meeting was attended by political leaders, traditional rulers, chiefs, and other stakeholders, with cultural displays welcoming the FCT Minister and his entourage.
