Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has pledged his administration’s commitment to securing a better future anchored on strong institutions, sustainable economic growth, empowered youth, inclusive development and lasting stability, as the state formally commenced activities to mark its 50th anniversary.
The governor made the pledge on Monday at the opening ceremony of the Oyo State at 50 celebrations held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan. He described the golden jubilee as both a moment to celebrate the state’s identity, resilience and progress over the past five decades, and an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to building a greater future.
Makinde noted that the milestone was deeply personal to him, having spent the last 50 years of his life in the state, and said his administration was determined to ensure that the next five decades deliver greater prosperity, fairness, dignity and hope for all residents.
According to him, this vision would be achieved through a competitive economy that creates jobs, attracts investment and expands opportunities, supported by infrastructure development, forward-looking education and institutions that endure beyond any administration.
While acknowledging past achievements, the governor said the state was using the golden jubilee to strengthen the foundations for the future, with a renewed commitment to peace, security, good governance and fiscal responsibility.
Makinde also paid tribute to the people of the state, noting that recent messages shared on the Oyo State digital tribute wall underscored the fact that the true strength of the state lies in its people. He expressed appreciation to all individuals who have contributed to the safety, security and development of Oyo State over the years.
In his goodwill message, former Governor of Oyo State and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, commended past military administrators, civilian governors and political leaders for their sacrifices, which he said collectively shaped the fortunes of the state.
Similarly, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin; the Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Hon. Justice R.B. Akintola; Chairman of Bovas Group, Arch. Segun Bamidele; and Chief (Mrs) Elizabeth Akinyele, praised Governor Makinde for institutionalising the Oyo at 50 celebration and honouring the legacies of past leaders.
They also lauded the administration’s achievements in workers’ and pensioners’ welfare, infrastructure development, security and economic expansion, describing Oyo State as a pacesetter under Makinde’s leadership.
Earlier, Chairman of the Oyo State at 50 Anniversary Committee, Hon. Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, said the celebration was an opportunity to recognise the efforts of successive administrations that laid foundations in governance, education, agriculture, infrastructure and public service. He commended Makinde’s people-centred governance and called on residents to look forward to a future of expanded industrialisation and investment driven by infrastructure and policy stability.
The event attracted a wide range of dignitaries, including former and serving public officials, traditional rulers, lawmakers, members of the diplomatic and business communities, labour leaders and other stakeholders from across the state and beyond.
