Tax Leaders, Advisers Meet on Implementation

By Ayomide Otitoju

The National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC) has intensified its stakeholder engagement efforts with a high-level consultative meeting involving leading tax advisory firms, professional bodies and institutional representatives, as part of moves to ensure the effective implementation of Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws.

The session brought together national presidents of key tax-related institutions and senior tax partners from advisory firms to review implementation priorities and align expectations across the public and private sectors.

Speaking at the meeting, NTPIC Chairman, Mr Joseph Tegbe, said the success of the ongoing tax reforms would depend more on effective change management than on policy design alone. He underscored the need for clear communication, consistency in interpretation and the building of public trust to drive acceptance and compliance.

Tegbe reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to sustained engagement with sub-national governments through the Joint Revenue Board and other relevant institutions, noting that harmonised interpretation, capacity building and alignment between federal and state tax administrations were critical to successful implementation.

Participants broadly welcomed the reforms, describing them as timely and structural, with a focus on strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal framework rather than pursuing short-term revenue increases. Discussions were framed within the Federal Government’s wider reform agenda aimed at achieving long-term fiscal sustainability, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

While commending the robustness of the new legislative framework, participants highlighted the need for consistent interpretation across institutions and the issuance of clear operational guidelines to avoid fragmented enforcement. They also called for coordinated and simplified public education strategies that clearly explain the implications of the reforms for individuals, small businesses and corporates, while reinforcing principles of fairness, proportionality and national development.

In his closing remarks, Tegbe thanked participants for their contributions and reaffirmed the NTPIC’s commitment to structured consultations and the timely resolution of issues identified during the engagement.

The meeting was also attended by the Chairman of the Stakeholder Engagement Subcommittee, Barrister Ismael Ahmed; the Chairman of the Technical Subcommittee, Mr Ajibola Olomola; and members of the NTPIC Secretariat.
