Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg has completed the coveted EGOT, earning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards, after winning a Grammy on Sunday for the best music film documentary Music by John Williams.
At 79, Spielberg joins an elite group of just 22 people to achieve EGOT status, a list that includes showbiz icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, and Richard Rodgers.
The documentary honours 93-year-old composer John Williams, Spielberg’s longtime collaborator on classics including Jaws and Schindler’s List. “This acknowledgment is obviously deeply meaningful to me because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams’ influence on culture and music is immeasurable and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled,” Spielberg said in a statement shared on Amblin Entertainment’s Instagram account.
Throughout his career, Spielberg has won three Academy Awards—twice for Best Director and once for Best Picture for Schindler’s List—as well as four Primetime Emmys for projects including the WWII series Band of Brothers. He also earned a Tony Award as a producer for the musical A Strange Loop.
