Chelsea Football Club has been fined £10.75 million ($14.27 million) and handed a suspended one-year transfer ban over historical breaches of Premier League regulations, the league announced on Monday.
In addition, the London club has been issued an immediate nine-month academy transfer ban. The sanctions follow information provided to the Premier League by the consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly after their 2022 takeover of Chelsea from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
The league’s investigation found that between 2011 and 2018, undisclosed payments from third parties linked to Chelsea were made to players, unregistered agents, and others. Officials noted, however, that even if these payments had been properly reported in historical financial submissions, the club would not have breached the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).
Chelsea’s proactive self-reporting, admissions of breach, and “exceptional co-operation” were cited as mitigating factors in determining the severity of the sanctions.
Separately, the Football Association has charged Chelsea with 74 alleged breaches of its rules, also linked to disclosures made by the club’s current ownership.
