Visibility Doesn’t Equal Trust, Says Ememobong Udofot E.

A branding and communications expert, Ememobong Udofot E., has cautioned businesses against equating visibility with growth, describing the assumption as a costly misconception that can undermine long-term success.
In an analysis titled “The Visibility Trap,” Udofot argued that while visibility enhances market presence through campaigns, partnerships, and media exposure, it does not automatically translate into credibility or customer trust. She noted that many companies mistake frequent exposure for legitimacy, creating businesses that appear successful without establishing a solid foundation.
According to her, legitimacy is determined not by how often a brand is seen, but by the conclusions users draw about its reliability and trustworthiness. She explained that customers ultimately base decisions on whether they can trust a platform with their money, time, and reputation, rather than on brand familiarity alone.
Udofot highlighted that in sectors such as financial services, particularly in emerging markets, users operate with heightened risk awareness, making trust a critical factor in decision-making. She added that visibility fails to address key concerns such as accountability, recovery from failure, and consistency of service delivery.
She further explained that legitimacy is built through operational performance, including consistent outcomes, system reliability under pressure, clarity in user experience, and prompt resolution of issues. These factors, she said, serve as stronger indicators of trust than traditional branding efforts.
The expert warned that prioritising visibility without establishing legitimacy creates a gap between expectation and actual user experience, which can lead to declining trust and reputational damage over time. Conversely, she noted that businesses that first build credibility can leverage visibility as a growth accelerator, ensuring that new users encounter a dependable system.
Udofot emphasised that companies should focus on aligning their promises with user experience, treating trust as a structural issue rather than a communication strategy. She concluded that sustainable success in modern markets depends not on attention alone, but on reliability that is consistently demonstrated and trusted by users.
