Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the Red Line Rail project will transport over 500,000 passengers daily when fully operational, as part of efforts to ease commuting and strengthen the state’s transport network.
Speaking to State House correspondents at Lagos House, Marina, on Wednesday, the governor disclosed that the state had acquired 24 new coaches from China to boost operations on the rail line.
He explained that the Red Line would operate eight-car trains—double the capacity of the Blue Line’s four-car configuration—covering the 27-kilometre corridor from Oyingbo to Agbado, with up to 37 trips daily.
Sanwo-Olu said discussions were ongoing to extend the rail line into neighbouring Ogun State to accommodate more commuters, noting that the expansion aligns with Lagos’ broader multimodal transport master plan integrating rail, road, and waterways.
He added that the ongoing Omi-Eko water transport project would introduce high-capacity electric boats by 2027 to further enhance ferry services across the state.
The governor noted that the integration of various transport modes is aimed at improving mobility, boosting productivity, and increasing revenue generation in Lagos.
He also recalled that additional rolling stock had earlier been procured for the Blue Line, adding that similar investments are being replicated on the Red Line to strengthen rail infrastructure.
