Tottenham Hotspur have signed Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City for a reported initial fee of £75 million ($102 million), taking their spending in the transfer market beyond £300 million this summer.
The deal is part of Tottenham’s effort to strengthen their attack after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season.
Savinho said a conversation with head coach Roberto De Zerbi convinced him to join the club.
“As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team,” he said.
De Zerbi’s influence late last season helped Tottenham retain their Premier League status, avoiding relegation for the first time in 49 years. However, the club’s expensive rebuilding project suffered a setback on the opening weekend of the new campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Brentford.
Savinho joins a growing list of arrivals that includes Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke. Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have also arrived on free transfers.
De Zerbi praised Savinho’s attacking qualities and said the Brazilian would bring energy and creativity to the team.
“Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity,” De Zerbi said.
“We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”
Tottenham could conduct further business with Manchester City before the transfer window closes, with Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush reportedly also set to move to north London.
Savinho joined City in 2024 from Troyes, another club within the City Football Group, for £30 million. He previously attracted attention during a successful loan spell at Girona, another City Football Group club.
However, he struggled to reproduce that form at Manchester City, scoring seven goals in 84 appearances during his time at the club.
Savinho now begins a new chapter at Tottenham as De Zerbi looks to rebuild the squad and improve the club’s fortunes following last season’s relegation battle.
