A telerobotic surgical procedure conducted between Ogun State and Abuja on September 19, 2026, has demonstrated the potential of telecommunications technology to expand access to specialist healthcare in Nigeria.
The procedure, led by Professor Obi Davies-Ekwenna in collaboration with RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital, used MTN 5G technology to connect medical expertise across the two locations.
The development highlights the potential of high-speed telecommunications networks to support remote medical procedures and connect specialists with patients across geographical distances.
It also underscores the growing role of technology in healthcare delivery, particularly in improving access to specialised medical expertise beyond major urban centres.
